April is a busy month in the garden so there was a lot to talk about during this week’s classes. As we are all getting to know each other so well now, there was plenty of chat and laughter too.
We always start off with some science and this month it was all about sowing and growing. By understanding how germination works we can give our seeds the best possible start in life and encourage them to grow into healthy plants for our garden.
The lighter nights meant we could do our planting in the garden for a change. This month we were planting dahlia tubers and I had four beautiful dahlia varieties for everyone to choose from, plant and take home. Fingers crossed that the dahlia tubers will start to sprout new shoots. In next month’s class we’ll learn how to propagate from them.
Who could have imagined how much fun it would be to talk about weeding and pruning with like minded people over a glass of wine and some homemade cake? There was such a lovely atmosphere as we discussed our own gardens and how to bring them to life.
Many people have a garden – even if it’s only a small backyard – but few people would call themselves gardeners. One of the purposes of my classes is to give everyone the confidence to enjoy gardening and start to see themselves as gardeners.
My garden gives me so much pleasure and it’s a delight to share my knowledge and watch my garden class groups flourish. I can’t wait to meet everyone again next time.
